The secret of life and content
is
to begin a new day with courage and
the belief that it can be made the best of all days,
whatever change it brings.

My Story

Life coaching and micro habits have saved my life—literally. Through learning and applying the Tiny Habits® Method and working weekly with a certified coach trained through The Life Coach School, I managed to lower my fasting blood sugar level by a total of 19 points in a nine-month span, reducing my risk of diabetes. I also developed healthier eating habits and lowered my cholesterol levels so that I no longer needed statin pills.

In the process, I learned brain-based strategies and tools to address overwhelm and negative self-talk, teaching myself how to feel uncomfortablesometimes very uncomfortableand “do it anyway.” I also learned how to be brave and show up for myself and take massive action toward my long-held goals and dreams. These strategies served me well throughout 2020 and 2021, a period of multiple losses and grief for me and my family, including the shock of suddenly losing my beloved dad, Dennis, and my mother’ s sweetheart, Juan.

Growing up in New York in a family of teachers during the civil rights era, I was raised to believe in the importance of helping people develop their full potential and giving back to society. These core beliefs have powered more than 30 years of work as a writer of grants, strategic plans, and accreditation reports for educational institutions, museums, and nonprofit arts and social service organizations.

One of the magical things about my work in this field is seeing, time and time again, the power of vision and purpose, how a dedicated individual or team of individuals can create something from nothing for the greater good of the world. Coaching also contributes to this greater good by helping individuals do their "human revolution."

As a Buddhist, I believe that each of us has the power within to activate our potential and transform our lives at any moment—and transform the world in the process.

Regardless of your faith or beliefs, you, too, can decide to be a person who can change for the better, right now, and become the person you are meant to be.

I am a writer and coach and occasional English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) reading and writing teacher who loves helping individuals and organizations articulate and activate their higher purpose. I live in Berkeley, California and Shanghai, China with my husband, Teng Jian, and many books.

Appreciation - A special thanks to Coach M.J. Sharifi from Corinne Crabtree's No BS Weightloss Program, who held the space for me, encouraged me, and challenged me to be curious about and change my thoughts and behavior patterns. I am also grateful to, and continue to learn from, my fellow coaches from the Tiny Habits® Academy, The Life Coach School, and the No B.S. Weightloss® Advanced Certificate Program. In addition, I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to my Hero’s Journey team members (the original Valiant Heart Leaders!), as well as to all of my friends and colleagues who supported me through this journey. Thanks also to my first ongoing client, Millie L.--it has been an honor to support you. Finally, I wish to acknowledge my father, Dennis James Kennedy, a teacher, a writer, and a smart and sensitive man, who gave us all many gifts but could never quite fully realize his own creative gifts during his lifetime.
